Graphing, Central Message, Mission Statements...Oh, my!

Today was our first day working on graphs. We had a room full of stinky feet! They sorted, named each group, and then we built our life size graph.

Elsie, J'yaire, Matthew, and Madison are dissecting excerpts from David Shannon's book, Too Many Toys, looking for evidence to prove the central message.

Will and Meeleah share their beginning writing of their mission statements.

Math-tools of choice

Taking an assessment can be taxing to some students but as I assess  "sit along side of them" today, I'm watching as each students pull out a math tools, of their choice from their math bag, they feel will best help solve the problem. Some are using their number line, others are using their teen-frame, some are using their fingers and others drawing the pictures.
Landon is using his number line to determine how many pennies Daniel has if he has 3 more than Tom. WAY TO GO LANDON!!

Addison chose to use her teen-frame and counters to determine what is 10 and 9 ones. AWESOME JOB USING TOOLS, ADDISON!!
Allison chose to use the number line to help her make sense of the problem 10 and 9 ones. ALLISON, YOU'RE DOING GREAT!!

J'yaire used a teen-frame to rethink and make sense of the problem! He got it correct!! I'M SO PROUD OF HIM!!

Home Connection: Check out and read some of David Shannon's books together. The illustrations are great and they are funny! They're also a great way for the kids to get key details from the pictures.

Writer's Workshop-Mission Statements

We are learning what a mission statement is, what is included in a mission statement, and words that we could use to write our own class and personal mission statement. We've read several missions statements, made noticings of what is included, made notes on a mission statement, and today we highlighted words we would like to borrow when we write our class and personal mission statement.

Home connection: search your favorite organization, toy company, store, etc. with your child and talk about the promise they make to their audience.

Serious and silly students from the class of 2026!

J

WOW...we are rocking and rolling in Room 104!

We are finally getting into the groove of things in our room. We are settled, learning, and having a great time. Over the past 11 days we have reviewed number sense, how to generate questions, we are still learning about rules and laws, we have assigned jobs in our classroom to establish a community, learned and are in the process of working, independently, in math and literacy stations, set up writer's workshop, sang, danced, shared, cheered each other on, and we will continue to do all of this and more in the weeks and months to come. Below are some pictures of the fun we've had and we're looking forward to lots more!
